Effective Presentation Skills

Working Your Audience

Raytheon has a leadership team who, though they have vast experience, needed a Presentation Skills Programme to raise their standard of even higher than it already was. These are people who are, shall we say, more on the mature side who we knew wouldn't take kindly to being told what to do by some young upstart.

It's a feature of all Impact Factory partners that they have to have a lot of experience before we let them loose on a client.

So, ipso facto, most of our partners are over forty with several previous and often unusual careers to their name.

In this case, we chose Graham Bennett as the man with the ability to deliver to the men (and they were all men) from Raytheon.

Raytheon has five values that they all live by, so we picked them up and made them relevant to presenting:

The 5 S's of Presentation

  1. Sort -- Be clear about the impact you want to make
  2. Simplify -- Short and punchy makes a bigger impact than crammed to overfull
  3. Sweep -- Use passion and your own individual style to sweep your audience along with you
  4. Standardise -- Set the Presentation standard that others will aspire to
  5. Sustain -- Keep your audience on the edge of their seats so they'll want more!

In a one-day presentation skills programme, which is now being offered throughout the company, we concentrated on the idea of Working your Audience covering the issues of:

  • Developing a personal presenting style
  • There is no right way
  • Use what already works, rather than learning a new skill
  • Building confidence
  • Knowing you have something else to try
  • The dynamics of communication and how it works
  • What you do is as important, if not more, as what you say

We worked intensively on presentations using the IMPACT model:

The use of the Individual's best skills to convey a clear Message, well Prepared, with good Audience interaction, presented with Conviction and supported by the right Technical backup

The feedback so far, is that everyone on the presentation skills course found it tremendously useful and so far several of the participants have made inspiring and impactful presentations that they are rightly proud of.
