Team Building - Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

Team Building

When the goals aren't so clearly defined, or there seem to be different routes towards them and different priorities, teamwork becomes a little more complicated.

Clarity of the goal and the route map is crucial.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute trust serving a diverse population in South West London and Surrey.

It's an exciting place to work where the staff are valued highly and the emphasis is on working together to provide the ultimate goal of excellent patient care.

The trust has been subject to a lot of internal change in the last twelve months and although there are still some changes to come, the new CEO, Samantha Jones, consulted with Impact Factory with a view to creating a day to bring the executive team together to look at how to move forward in a positive and cohesive way on the road ahead.

Team Building Day

The team is made up of highly experienced, motivated, and energetic people.

Our job was to facilitate their journey towards working together in the most effective way.

To begin with, we looked at issues ranging from how the senior team is perceived, and what they can do to affect that perception; we looked at the nature of cooperation and the consequences of working in departmental silos.

It was a fast-paced day but we took time to give the participants a chance to develop a deeper understanding of each other's roles and the challenges each executive team member faces.

As always with our work at Impact Factory, we were keen to stress the importance of acknowledging the qualities and strengths they each bring to the team.

The kernel of the work was in the distillation of the goals that underpin excellent patient care and delineating the route map to get there.

We asked the participants to define some rules of operation to make this happen most effectively.

The team appointed people to take charge of areas of responsibility.

We even appointed a minister of fun!

Something close to our hearts here at Impact Factory, and very important to make sure that the goodwill and camaraderie are not lost in the seriousness of the work they are undertaking.
